Location

Alfasi 5, Tel Aviv

This project transforms a derelict industrial building in South Tel Aviv into a vibrant nursery, incorporating a unique apartment design for an elderly tenant and his/hers caretaker.

The existing inner courtyard was redesigned to facilitate sightlines and communication among residents. The ground floor will house businesses that support the building's residents and caregivers while also generating foot traffic and activity throughout the day.
Special metal elements were used to expand the exterior corridor leading to the apartments, adding accessible gardening areas and sun terraces. Gardening, a therapeutic activity for the elderly, also allows caregivers, often from foreign countries, to grow vegetables and spices from their homelands.
The apartments feature expansive walls that open onto the inner courtyard, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces and preventing elderly residents from feeling isolated.

The interior is divided into two levels: the accessible entrance level includes a living room with modular furniture that can be moved outside and a residential unit for the elderly. The upper level features a residential unit for the caregiver and a flexible space that can be adapted for various uses, such as an additional bedroom, hobby room, or study.
The interior design incorporates exposed concrete, natural materials, and warm colors to create a pleasant and relaxing environment that contrasts with the building's industrial past. Semi-transparent polycarbonate partitions allow natural light to enter while maintaining privacy, echoing the shared living experience and dispelling feelings of isolation.
